Can you make the natural world perfectly safe at all times? Perhaps not, but you can certainly commit your best effort to the green space you do own. A garden can be a lovely place to retire, relax and entertain, but it also has hazards worth managing. Moreover, hazards that may be somewhat fine for you to skirt past, like an uneven path, could be much more dangerous to children or the elderly relatives in your family.
Safety is always an important part of your daily life, but we only recognize that when something goes wrong. It’s best to prevent that, especially as we put in plans to extend or improve parts of our home. If you’re considering managing your garden in this way, perhaps investing in a new deck, path, water feature or growing area, then it’s always healthy to consider what your options are.
In this post, we intend to help you figure that out. Without further ado, please consider the following:
Secure Balustrades
If your garden has a raised deck or a change in level with steps, a good balustrade is a must, because railings provide a stable handhold for people at different heights. If you have small kids, a balustrade also acts as a barrier, which should help against falls. Make sure the gaps between the vertical parts are narrow so a child can’t get stuck. Moreover, a well-built balustrade can also look great if installed by the right services.
Gentle Fences & Guides
It’s good to use fences not to block off certain areas, but to gently add borders or restrictions to where someone would naturally walk. So if there’s a small railing around your pond, the likelihood someone will fall in is much reduced. If you look for ways to soften the boundaries, instead of a fence with jagged tops you might have one with a smooth, rounded finish at either side of the path. As for that path, walkable surfaces like flagstones or smooth concrete can be great. You might also have wider privacy fences so your garden is a safe place for your children and pets , limiting any access routes in or out.
Visibility Across The Garden
A safe garden is one where you can easily see what’s happening. Having clear lines of sight helps you keep an eye on children playing or older family members, even from the back window if needed. This should be helped by avoiding big plants or structures that create blind spots, or at least having those near the edges of the garden to layer them appropriately.
If you have a shed or a play area, put it somewhere it won’t block your view from the main seating areas. Also think about adding outdoor lighting as another way to improve visibility, especially after dark. Path lights and spotlights can make a huge difference in how easy it is to walk through and see your garden at night.
With this advice, you’ll be certain to improve your garden in the best possible way.
