We’ve all broken a phone at one point or another. It’s annoying and costly for our bank accounts, especially if we have to fork out for a new one. Below are some of the most common ways people break their phones as well as some handy tips on how to prevent it from happening in the first place.
Reduced Battery Life
Phone batteries will start to gradually degrade over time and that’s the case no matter the phone you buy. It’ll mean that, when you charge your phone to supposedly 100% after a few years of having it, your phone’s battery life will be a lot shorter than when it was new. Eventually you’ll end up either having to replace the battery or getting a whole new phone.
Whilst it’s inevitable that your phone’s battery lifespan will reduce, there are things you can do to slow this down. Try to avoid overcharging your phone, meaning once it gets to 100%, take it off charge and avoid having it sit charging on 100% for long periods of time. You should also always use the manufacturer’s cables. Cables not authorised by the phone manufacturer might not be optimal or could even be damaging to your phone’s battery so avoid it if possible.
Screen Breaking/Cracking
A broken screen, usually after being dropped, is the most common reason for a phone repair. It’s the most vulnerable part of your phone so it makes sense for it to be the leading cause of damage. Cracked screens can result in you not being able to use your phone, especially if the break is seriously bad.
To prevent this from happening again, try fitting a more robust protective case so that when you do inevitably drop your phone, it’s not going to instantly smash. Another way of saving yourself a headache is to fit a strap to the back of your phone. This gives you more to hold onto, reducing the chance it slips out of your hand onto the floor.
Water Damage
Electronics don’t like getting wet. Liquids can cause your phone all kinds of trouble once they work their way into your phone’s circuits. Once liquid reaches the inner components of your phone, there’s very little you can do to save it. It can damage the speakers, corrode components and even short-circuit, making the device unusable.
Ideally you want to prevent water from getting on your phone altogether, so owning a waterproof case might be a good idea or just try avoiding using it in wet conditions or near a pool. If you do end up getting water on your phone then you want to act quickly.
Dry it immediately. Turn off the phone to avoid any additional damage and don’t turn it back on until it has completely dried. The key is to be quick. The quicker you act the less likely your phone will have irreparable damage.
As expensive as they are, we all end up dropping and even damaging our phones. Knowing what the most common ways people break their phone should help you to avoid doing the same.
