Living rooms carry a lot of weight in all of our homes, no matter if you have a massive living space or just a section of an apartment room dedicated to it. That’s because they’re where we spend a good number evening hours, host friends for coffee, or simply unwind after a long day at work that we’d rather forget about. While every room matters, the living room tends to shape how the whole house feels and how comforting it is. If we can’t relax on the sofa or enjoy reading on our day off, then the house feels less complete. It’s also the space most likely to show wear and tear over time, given how much use it gets.

This means that making smart choices about living room upgrades can help you alter how the entire house functions. Some changes bring more value than others, especially when thinking about the long term, as paint might refresh a space quickly, but other investments can improve both the look and livability of a room for years to come.

Money spent thoughtfully here tends to make the biggest difference to daily life, but if you’re not an interior designer, you might wonder where to begin. Don’t worry, we intend to help you, because everyone deserves somewhere to relax:

You Have To Get The Seating Right

If you don’t have somewhere comforting to sit, and enough space for people you generally have over or that occupy your house now and then, the space won’t feel altogether complete. Some basic sofas might look fine in the showroom and even last for a while, but better-made pieces keep their shape and comfort through years of daily use, which is why many invest in designer sofas they know will last over a decade or more. Look to the quality of the frame, the density of the cushion foam, and the durability of the fabric, because these will determine how comforting the piece is and how you can repair it after a long timet Even if you have to decorate much later to justify a better seat now, it’s worth it.

Storage Frees Your Space

Clutter can build up so quickly without us realizing that it can be hard to manage it. Having somewhere proper to put books, remote controls, gaming equipment or whatever else you use regularly stops that cluttered feeling from taking over.

Built-in shelving works wonderfully if you can get it, but even a good cabinet or two changes how the room works day to day for the most part, so invest in a good set. It’s best to have one or two good storage zones, sometimes even connected to other furniture like the TV stand, because a few well-chosen pieces often work better than filling every wall with shelves just because you can.

Carpet & Flooring Sets The Character

Flooring affects much more than you might initially imagine, such as how warm the room feels to how noise travels through the house. Invest in quality, as excellent carpet brings comfort and quiet, but wood or laminate can make cleaning easier and last for ages. The choice really depends on how you use the room, as we all know carpet feels lovely underfoot on winter mornings, but hard flooring might work better if you have pets or young children running around. This way you can manage your expectations to the needs of the house, or even adapt such as with appropriate rugs that can be moved when needed.

With this advice, we hope you can see just how effective good living room planning may be.

  2. […] Laying down a rug on your living room floor is a great way to make the room feel more snug. This could be particularly the case if you have a hard floor in your living room – a rug could provide a warm surface to sink your toes into while watching TV and help insulate the room. For maximum cosiness, consider a deep pile rug. You should try to choose a rug that is equal in width or larger than your couch.  […]
