There’s nothing that adds a cosier feel to a room than how it’s lit. It carries a lot of importance in setting the mood and making you feel at home, so what are your options when it comes to adding lighting?

Install A Fireplace

Imagine it’s the middle of winter – there’s nothing more cosy than being snuggled up on the sofa opposite a fire. Not only is it going to provide you with ample warmth, but a fireplace will light up your room and give it a nice homely atmosphere.

Fireplaces and their surrounds are incredibly personalisable. You’ll be able to find and install one that suits your tastes. You’re also not fixed to just having a standard wood burner, you’ll find plenty of local fireplaces that come with different heating sources, like electric and gas, that work with your home’s needs.

Plenty of Table and Floor Lamps

Have lamps everywhere! Add lamps in differing styles, types and sizes to create a warm feel. Put them standing in corners, on top of shelves, over the sofa and just anywhere you could add one. They add multiple warm pockets of light throughout your living room, making sure there’s enough brightness without having to have the dreaded, harsh big light on.

Lamps provide some additional light, become great decor pieces and fill out space. They make great home investments – and you can get really creative with lamp types and styles to add nice focal points in your living room.

Add Dimmer Switches and Smart Bulbs

Installing smart bulbs and adding dimmer switches to your living room is a game-changer. Having the ability to set the colour and brightness of your lights allows you to set and change the tone of your room. You can have different lighting levels for different lamps, depending on where people are sitting or the mood you want to create.

This is a particularly great hack if you are on a budget and want to add more atmosphere to your living room. You only have to pay for the bulbs, as long as they are compatible with your current lights, you won’t have to spend a fortune buying a bunch of new lamps to fill your room!

Utilise Natural Light

You may want to add curtains to your windows for a bit of privacy, but that doesn’t mean you have to block out all of the sunlight. Why not add some soft, sheer curtains that allow sunlight to diffuse through and still light up your living room whilst also providing you with some health benefits as a bonus? Your space will end up feeling light and airy without having to sacrifice your privacy.

There are even more ways you can use lighting to create the atmosphere you want, but those listed above are some of the most effective at making your living room feel inviting and homely. Whatever is the best option for you, you’ll end up with the cosiest living room everyone will want to hang out in.
