We don’t like to think of ourselves as being cold-hearted, but when it comes to your home, that might be the reality. Most families organise themselves around the fridge: the eternal purveyor of delicious chilled treats!
But how do you take care of it (and yourself)? Let’s take a look.
Wipe It Down
Going a couple of weeks without wiping down your fridge can cause it to build up all sorts of nasty gunk. Bits of old onion and vegetable trimmings quickly accumulate on the surfaces, rotting while you pack in new food – not what you want.
Therefore, maintain a rigorous schedule of wiping down and cleaning your fridge every couple of weeks or so. Cleaning out all the junk can help it feel more hygienic and pleasant whenever you open it.
Keep Chopped Ingredients Inside
You’ll also want to prepare chopped ingredients and keep them inside. This approach lets you make quick lunches and dinners, helping you improve your diet and overall health.
For instance, you can use your refrigerator to cook whole grains in your rice cooker in the morning while you get ready and store them in there until you want to eat them later in the evening.
You can also use your refrigerator for things that take a while to make, like salsa or bean salads. Using your fridge effectively lets you concoct healthy packed lunches for the following day.
Keep Your Maintenance Schedule Up To Date
You also want to keep on top of maintenance when you own a fridge. Keeping it working is essential for ensuring family members are happy.
If you decide to do DIY repairs, you’ll want to ensure you have all the proper tools and parts you need. For instance, if you notice the light isn’t turning on, you might need to fit a new bulb or Reed switch sensor.
Of course, you can also schedule professional maintenance to check things like the condenser coils and circuitry.
Pack It With Wellness Shots Preemptively
Don’t wait until hunger strikes to exercise your willpower. Instead, pack your fridge full of things you can just grab immediately whenever you feel your willpower waning. Using these to top up your stomach can prevent you from reaching for the junk (or ordering it on your phone apps).
These shots could be things like lemon and ginger-grass smoothies, mixtures of nuts and goji berries, or portions of fruit salad in tubs. Just pick something that can take the edge off your cravings and leave you feeling more satisfied.
Make It More Organised
Another thing you can do to care for your fridge is to improve how you arrange it. Knowing where to put everything can be tremendously challenging if you don’t have a system in place.
Most people place fruits and vegetables in the crisper drawer and then place meat and vegetable products on top of that. You can label shelving and even add dates in big bold writing with a felt-tip pen to tell you when things are about to go off.
