Cape Verde Family Hotels – Sol Dunas & Melia Dunas Sal

Back in 2018 we decided we would be doing Hollys 1st birthday and Christmas on holiday in Cape Verde. We hadn’t actually planned Cape Verde but when we dropped into Tui our travel advisor had recommended it due to the short flight (around 5 hours) and the warn temperatures even in December.

We booked this one 11 days before we flew – the holiday should have been £4,531.99 for flights from Bristol, 2 bedroom family room for 2 adults, 2 children and an infant, transfers and Silver zone parking. With all the discounts we paid £2,579.89 (saving us £1,952.10!)

As we would be away for Christmas we did ‘Christmas’ the week before so the family wouldn’t miss out on passing out presents and dinner!

So we got together with Gazs mum and Sister and did all the present swapping before we travelled.

We chose not to tell them we were going on holiday and just said we were going to stay in a hotel for the night, which wasn’t a lie, we did stay in the Travelodge!

But first we head to TGI Fridays for dinner (you know we do love a TGI Fridays dinner!) – our holiday officially starts now!

Flights

The flight is around 5 hours long which is about as long as they can manage without being bored.

No in flight entertainment on our flight but we were told if you fly from London you get the bigger plane which does have the screens in the seat backs.

The transfer isn’t very long (around 20 minutes) as the island is pretty small, be prepared to see a lot of nothing as its pretty much desert outside of the resorts.

When we landed we headed straight for the beach and was just in time to catch the sun setting – The beach is beautiful.

It is full of sun loungers and canopies there is also a bar which is included within your all inclusive.

We chose the Sol Dunas in Sal as it had a 2 bedroom apartment that could accommodate us all, we struggle with resorts that have rooms big enough for us all.

It is attached to its sister hotel the Melia Dunas which has additional bars and restaurants for their guests, along with an adult only pool area. They can use all of the Sol Dunas facilities but Sol Dunas guests can’t use the Melia Dunas bars unless you pay an upgrade.

Sol Dunas

The Sol Dunas has 3 outdoor pools, a Kids pool and splash park.

For food you won’t be short of choices – you have the ‘Spices’ main buffet restaurant or you can book into the Il Terrazzo Italian restaurant and during the day you also have the Grille snack restaurant located over by the children’s splash pool – there are also 5 bars.

Kids Clubs

The kids clubs are split into 3 age groups

Mini kids club for 6 months to 4 years

With Mini discos, mini buffets and even watching movies in the mini cinemas your little one will have plenty to do.

Kids club for 5 to 12 year olds

There are so many activities going on here from arts and crafts to sports, the girls loved going and went most days.

Teens club for 13 to 17 year olds.

There are DJ classes, video games, karaoke, football tournaments and films in the mini-cinema, along with plenty of other activities.

Pools

You’ll find several pools here including a shallow children’s pool with a massive pirate ship climbing frame in the middle.

We pretty much had the main pools to ourselves most days as most people head down to the beach.

The children’s pool is slightly businer but still plenty of sun loungers available.

Around the pools you will also find these little pods they were perfect for Holly to have an afternoon nap as you could pull the sides round to completely close it and be out of the sun.

Also not to miss out on a bit of festive spirit there were Christmas trees dotted around the pool areas!

Food

The main Spices buffet restaurant has so much choice, event he girls found things they liked and they are even worse than me for being picky!

We did book into the Italian A La Carte restaurant and they made Holly this beautiful cake on her birthday. The food was beautiful , make sure you book in as soon as you arrive as spaces fill up quickly.

Lottie also had this odd dessert combo of a sort of chocolate covered wafer with ice cream and fruit

Christmas Celebrations

Christmas is celebrated on Christmas Eve in Cape Verde and wow do they love to celebrate!

Celebrating Christmas when it was so hot was a first for us (although definitely not the last time- check out our New Year visit to Cuba!)

They really do go all out for Christmas though starting with the Christmas Eve Gala Dinner – The food was unbelievable the effort they put in was just amazing.

Starting with a champagne reception you are taken to your seats before enjoying the buffet with live entertainment.

Our Room

I didn’t seem to take any photos of the room but we had a really spacious 2 bedroom apartment. The images below are from the official website, much as I would love to take credit for the excellent photography!

These have a double bedroom and a twin bedroom and then we also had a travel cot for Holly.

Playground

Near to the children’s pool you will also find this giant wooden climbing frame. The girls loved it and were running around for ages.

Would you go back to Cape Verde?

We were due to go back for Christmas 2021 but covid had other ideas and we ended up delaying our holiday but we hope to be back soon because we had such a great time!
