In May 2019 during our period of home schooling, before everyone ended up home schooling, we decided to take the girls over to Portugal.
This was a real last minute decision – I booked it 7.10pm on 12th May and we flew out 6.50pm on 13th May.
It was a bargain – 3 nights at the Cerro Mar Colina, return flights to Bristol and Transfers for 2 adults, 2 children (7 & 8 years old) and an infant for the grand total of …. £417.14 !!!! Hopefully those sort of deals will return one day.
I always book my parking separately through Holiday Extras – click the banner below to find out more about them
Flights to Portugal are our favourite, just a couple of hours and you are there! (well 2hrs 35 minutes according to Tui)
We flew from Bristol which is also one of our favourite places to fly from being able to part directly outside the terminal is so much easier for us.
However the transfers are pretty long if you go with the Tui one – over 90 minutes – so well worth upgrading to a private transfer if you can afford too.
We went for a 1 bedroom apartment and we were allocated one on the first floor, but there are lifts thankfully so wasn’t a problem with the pushchair.
The apartments are roomy and the kitchens are well equipped, perhaps a little dated but they were perfectly fine for what we wanted.
The hotel is located in a quiet area, it says it is 6 minutes from the beach, which is a bit of a stretch. To get to the beach quickly you need to go down about 200 steps which are not pushchair friendly at all.
If you want to access the beach down the ramps its closer to a 20-30 minute walk but once you are in Albufeira there are loads of bars, restaurants and shops to stroll round.
We did go self catering but the hotel does offer bed and breakfast and half board options.
There are a couple of pools here, we loved the shallow toddler pool it was perfect for Holly and the girls likes the swim up bar in the bigger pool.
The girls managed to find a giant inflatable unicorn in town and that kept them amused, they also gained so much water confidence while we were here.
Geocaching in Portugal
You’ll probably know we love Geocaching and this was our first chance to try it internationally!
We followed the directions best we could with the buggy but I had to let Gaz, Chloe and Lottie claim this one while I waited with a fast asleep Holly at the bottom of the hill.
Not only did they find it but check out that stunning view from the top – Beautiful!
The beach is beautiful, dotted with loungers and umbrellas (chargeable).
You also have numerous bars and restaurants all overlooking the beach to sit in and take in the view and brush up on your Spanish / Portuguese – we tried teaching the girls some basic words too while we were here.
Our little holiday surprise…
Little did we know we were going to be coming home with the news we were expecting again!
A super exciting holiday and only 2 weeks until we are off to Florida!
Would we visit Portugal again?
We absolutely would – short flights, beautiful beaches and lots to do. However we would find a hotel much closer to the beach to avoid having to keep going up and down the steps!
