Gousto vs HelloFresh – Which one is better?

A question we get asked all the time is which one is better Gousto or HelloFresh recipe boxes? And this is really difficult to answer as each has their own benefits and ultimately it’s down to personal preference but here we will give you our run down on what we think of them both 🙂

What are Gousto and Hello Fresh Subscription boxes?

Both these companies offer subscription recipe box services. They are the perfect way to reduce food waste, help with meal planning and giving you new ideas of what to eat.

Both boxes offer fresh recipes and discounts on your first box and often for your whole first month. They do cater for some dietary preferences such as vegan meals and you can choose your meals to arrive on a regular weekly basis or just a one-off box if you prefer.

Your boxes come with plenty of ice packs to keep the fresh meat cool during transit and right amount of ingredients weighed out ready to use. You do not need to be home for delivery and it can be left in a safe place if you are out.

Gousto

You can order boxes up until lunchtime on a Saturday for delivery on Tuesday (That’s our choice of delivery day you can choose other days) so you can change your mind up until quite soon before the box will be delivered

There are around 50 new recipes each week including Vegetarian, Speedy, Gluten Free, Vegan, Dairy Free and even recipes provided by Joe Wicks for the Lean in 15 section.

They do a handy little folder (that is free!) to keep all your step by step instructions recipe cards in

You’ll also get £15 for every friend you recommend who orders a box 😊 sometimes this is even doubled to £30!

One of the downsides of the Gousto box is it only comes in 2 or 4 person box (not great when there are 3 of you!) and then choose the number of meals you want per week

It also isn’t delivered all bagged up the same as Hello Fresh – the smaller dry ingredients are bagged but all the fresh ingredients are loose meaning if you have a husband like mine, who doesn’t understand the recipe cards, they will use stuff they shouldn’t

Deliveries are available quite quickly if I were to order now I could get a delivery date as soon as 3 working days away.

HelloFresh

With Hello Fresh you have to make your choices 6 days before your box is delivered. We sometimes didn’t decide we wanted a box for the following week until after it was too late to order so went with Gousto instead.

Hello Fresh have 31 recipe choices each week including Vegetarian, Low Calorie, Premium and Quick & easy meals.

The Hello Fresh recipes come in individual bags with all the ingredients together.

The recipe cards are A4 and I haven’t come across a folder to keep them in from Hello Fresh so we keep them in an A4 clear wallet folder.

Hello Fresh offer you £20 for each friend you recommend who orders a box. They also give you Free boxes once you have ordered a certain amount of weeks yourself, to send to friends but you don’t earn a referral commission on these.

We found one of the benefits are you can order Hello Fresh for 2,3 or 4 people. Which is one of the biggest differences between the 2 boxes.

Although we love them both, we do tend to order Gousto over Hello Fresh mainly down to the additional choice and the time limit on ordering for the following week.

Price wise they are exactly the same for 2 people / 4 meals at £34.99 a week excluding any upgrades or add ons – Gousto has had the better quality of produce and has the better choice of different recipes each week

Let me know if you order either and what you think of them!

  1. Dirt, Diggers and Dinosaurs – I'm Emma, wife to ginger Yorkshireman Ben and Mummy to Stanley, James and Eli. I love a kitchen disco, keep chickens, tend an allotment, plan adventures and have a positive approach to life. You'll find me living in a terraced house with far too many boys, in the small town of Leek within the Staffordshire Moorlands, on the edge of the beautiful Peak District.

We are simply cook fans basically because we are so indecisive. I need to plan meals better and really like the look of the Hello Fresh boxes.

  2. All of your meals look delicious! I have been eyeing up both of these boxes as an option as I absolutely hate trying to decide what to cook for yea each week and when the kids go back to school and clubs etc it can be crazy busy! How did you find the portion sizes on both boxes? I have a teenage son and husband who enjoy their food and I wonder if the portion sizes will be enough lol! Thanks x

    1. They are surprisingly filling, we haven’t ever had one and then thought we needed something else after (apart from a tasty dessert 😋)

  3. Interesting review, I moved from HF to Gousto and definitely prefer Gousto but I must admit having the option to order for 3 would be amazing for when my daughter is home from uni. Michelle

  4. Really interesting to read your comparison. I’ve heard great things about both, but not taken the plunge just yet – we might have to!

    1. We really do like them. I am a terribly fussy eater and it makes my husbands life so much easier knowing I have ok’d these meals as something I will eat (or at least try!)

  5. Life can be Toff – Cirencester – I'm Kim and I'm a lifestyle blogger living in the Cotswold countryside. I really enjoy days out in the area, staycations in the UK and am aiming to get aboard more too. I love baking and cooking with each of these featuring highly on the blog. Elsewhere I enjoy photography, reading, writing, enjoying the countryside and walking my two dogs.

I’ve also tried both and prefer Gousto. I didn’t have much luck with Hello Fresh, missing items and produce definitely not fresh, however, the customer service always put it right very quickly and without hesitation.
